BEE PAVILLION
Nou Le Morne Festival 2019
Green Village, Mauritius
Bee Aware Pavilion
During the Nou Le Morne Festival 2019, Katja Loher was invited by Agathe Desvaux de Marigny to create the Bee Pavilion — a harmonious fusion of architecture, land art, and video installation that transforms nature into a space of wonder.
Along a forest path, visitors are guided toward a bamboo dome, an inviting sanctuary where time slows. Inside, they are encouraged to sit, breathe, and take pause from the festival’s rhythm. Gazing upward, guests witness fascinating video projections of dancing bees across the ceiling, accompanied by a soundscape composed by Asako Fujimoto. Through headphones, a delicate voice unveils the poetic Bee Manifesto, immersing listeners in a multisensory meditation on nature, community, and coexistence.
Around the pavilion, flowers crafted from recycled plastic bottles bloom — the result of community workshops that engaged local participants in collective creation. The collaboration extended to a dance performance with children, developed during these workshops and presented on the festival’s main stage, celebrating the spirit of unity between art, people, and the natural world.
